According to a BBC News report, the final result in the country's vote for independence revealed Scotland voting "no" 55% to 45%, meaning they will stay in the United Kingdom.

The official vote count was: No votes-2,001,926 to 1,617,989 for Yes votes.

Following the results of the referendum, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond called for unity, and later announced he would step down.

"We lost the referendum vote but Scotland can still carry the political initiative," said Salmond. "For me as leader my time is nearly over but for Scotland the campaign continues and the dream shall never die."
