Williams, who was 63, had reportedly been battling severe depression and bouts of substance abuse for quite some time, and died of an "apparent suicide."

He left behind three children, and his wife, Susan Schneider, who said in a statement:

"This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.

"On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Heading through the comedic ranks with such contemporaries as Steve Martin, Williams' breakout role of "Mork from Ork" in the '70s sitcom "Mork and Mindy," won a place in the hearts of many.

According to reports, there are four upcoming movies in which Williams has a part, including a sequel to "Mrs. Doubtfire."
