"We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross and we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far." -Gulgun Koroglu

Cross piece(Turkey)—After years of leading an excavation at Balatlar Church in Sinop Province, Gulgun Koroglu, an archaeologist at Turkey's Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, has discovered an ancient stone chest she believes may contain a piece of the cross Jesus was crucified on. (Photo: İHA)

Reports indicate Koroglu has not yet elaborated on why she thinks the wood may be part of Jesus' cross, tradition has long held that St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine distributed pieces of the wood to church leaders in Jerusalem, Rome and Constantinople.

Of course, it has also long been noted that although the possibility of authenticity exists, so does a proliferation of fakes.
