"Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it?" ?US Supreme Court

(Washington, DC)?The US Supreme Court ruled on Thursday morning that the controversial healthcare law?which would require Americans to purchase health insurance or be fined?is constitutional but only as a tax.

The 5-4 majority ruling noted the power Congress has to tax American citizens.

"The Affordable Care Act's requirement that certain individuals pay a financial penalty for not obtaining health insurance may [be] reasonably characterized as a tax. Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness," said the justices in the ruling.
