Oldest Known Hebrew Writing Translated

(Germany)—Five lines of ancient Hebrew on a 3,000-year-old clay pot discovered near Jerusalem have been translated by Old Testament expert Dr. Reinhard Achenbach.

Achenbach, a Professor of Protestant Theology at the University of Münster, said, "The form of the letters is older than the oldest Israelite text we have known until now, the 'Gezer calendar.'" (Photo: TheLocal.de)

According to a report in The Local, the Hebrew translation refers to taking care of the disadvantaged of ancient Israeli society.

The second and third lines reportedly read: "Give rights to slaves and to widows! Give rights to orphans and foreigners! Protect the rights of the poor and protect the rights of minors!"
