Could unusual cravings provide women with an early diagnosis tool?

(United Kingdom)?A recent report in the Daily Mail chronicles the experience of Elsie Campbell who woke up one morning craving lettuce. Later, after becoming addicted to eating it, she was found to have breast cancer.

Said Mrs. Campbell of her cravings: I'd always eaten it in salads, but suddenly, I just couldn't get enough of it. I could eat three or four whole lettuces a day. I'd eat a whole iceberg lettuce at work, and sit on the bus on the way home thinking about eating more and more. I knew something wasn't quite right, and my husband and my sons started to get quite worried about me."

It was the suspicion, and intervention, of her research scientist husband Jim, who detected the abnormality, that subsequently caused his wife to have early treatment to cure the cancer.

According to the report, Mr. Campbell discovered that lettuce contains two natural nutrients lacking in breast cancer sufferers that helps to fight cancer: selenium and sulphoraphane.
