International Conflict: Camels Illegally "Immigrating" to Israel

by Teresa Neumann : Oct 29, 2009 : Staff - Media Line

"Egypt shares a 166 mile long border with Israel, which is mostly comprised of low barbed wire that is often breached by illegal immigrants and smugglers."

A Camel

(Israel)—Here's an insightful report into an odd, exotic Egyptian/Israeli conflict. It concerns the political tensions surrounding hundreds of camels that cross the boarder from Egypt into Israel every year. Some of the errant camels are harmless, innocent strays; others are used to smuggle drugs or other illegal materials into the country. Regardless, Israeli authorities are reportedly worried that the camels wondering into Israel from other countries could be carrying deadly diseases, like Rift Valley fever, which can cause blindness, and even death, in humans. According to the report, once a camel sets foot on Israeli soil—which Israeli authorities claim is because Israel is greener—sending them back into Egypt is not a viable option, since there is no way to prove which country these unmarked animals are from.

One Israeli camel expert was quoted as saying the first measure that had to be taken was to build a proper barrier across the border, to stop camels from wandering into Israel and the second is to build a quarantine center on the border where crossing camels will be kept until it has been verified they are not carrying diseases, before they are returned to Egypt.
