"I've been a surgeon for 10 years, and this is probably one of the most incredible things I've ever seen."

Daniel Walker wasn't doing anything unusual on January 19th, he was jogging in his high school gym class, when he "felt real woozy," and collapsed on the floor. Just 17, Daniel had suffered a massive heart attack from a rare congenital heart flaw.

The Wakefield, Bronx resident was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he received a balloon heart pump, to keep him alive for a transplant. He was sent to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia to wait for an available heart, but within hours his own heart stopped beating, and Daniel was pronounced clinically dead.

Using CPR and a defibrillator, Drs. Abeel Mangi and Rachel Bijou were able to bring the boy back, restarting his badly damaged heart, then putting him onto a bypass machine, until a suitable transplant heart could be located.

But four days later, a miracle occurred. Daniel's heart suddenly showed signs of beating on its own. Drs. Mangi and Yoshifumi Naka risked taking him off the bypass machine, and his heart continued beating by itself.

"I've been a surgeon for 10 years, and this is probably one of the most incredible things I've ever seen," said Dr. Mangi, a cardiac surgeon at Columbia. "It's a miracle," he added, "There's really no other way to put it."

Two days later, Daniel was reportedly strong enough to undergo surgery to fix his Coronary Artery, and in just two weeks, the senior at Truman High School was back on his feet.

Daniel's mother, Gail Walker (51), remarked, "The only thing that carried me through this was my God. I prayed to my God and said, 'I want my son's heart to be healed.'"
