Spring Cleaning Your House Has Great Health Benefits—IF You Do it the Natural Way: Here Are Some Great Tips

Dr. Corinne Weaver : Mar 21, 2018  Dr. Corinne Weaver

There is no need to compromise your health for a super clean house. Try some of these tips and get away from using harsh chemicals. You don't have to know everything about getting started. Just start with one tip and slowly transform your house today.

I remember when I started to make the changes in my house cleaning to be chemical free about ten years ago. It was a process! My husband, Scott, is a cleaning fanatic and I am truly blessed because I hate cleaning. In fact, whenever I knew I had to clean I would start to have a panic attack. Now looking back, it was the overwhelming smell of the chemicals I was using that caused me to panic because now I love to clean and smell the refreshing essential oils I use in my cleaning. Cleaning without toxins is the way to go and I never want to go back.

Many large companies launch "new and improved" cleaning products that claim to protect your family but what they neglect to inform you is that these common cleaning products are lathered with harmful chemicals that have the potential to do more harm than good.

Whether you clean your own home, have a housekeeper, or a combination of both, I am sure there are two things that bother you:

Filth

Chemicals

Unfortunately, most people are using common household cleaners like big-box store detergent, hand soap, and dish soap, which are often filled with harmful ingredients that put you and your family at risk.

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to cleaning your home!

There are alternatives that are not only safer, but also more effective and cheaper than what you are accustomed to using right now.

Here are some MUST HAVE basics:

BAKING SODA: Absorbs and eliminates odor. Use to clean countertops, sinks, and tubs. Sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet and vacuum after 15 minutes for a fresher look and feel. I also use it on mattresses.

WHITE VINEGAR: Contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. Cuts grease and dissolves mineral deposits.

CASTILE SOAP: Lifts dirt, cuts grease, and eliminates tough stains. Pour a small amount over baking sheets and pans then scrub for a few minutes for clean, shiny results.

SALT: Salt is an effective scouring agent. Pour salt mixed with hot water down the kitchen sink regularly to deodorize and keep grease from building up.

COCONUT OIL or OLIVE OIL: Great natural cleaner and polisher. Rub it into leather or polish wood surfaces.

I love making my own cleaning supplies. I like to have my friends come over and make supplies that last at least 2-3 months. It is so much fun. I buy all my materials at Costco, Trader Joes, Amazon, and some essential oil companies. My friends just use my stuff and pay me back for the materials. We laugh and enjoy catching up while we make different type of cleaners.

Favorite essential oils I use for making my own cleaning products:

-Lemon

-Lime

-Orange

-Lemongrass

-Eucalyptus

-Melaleuca

-Thyme

-Peppermint

-Rosemary

-Clove

-Cinnamon

Get rid of the old!

As the warmer temperatures of spring thaw out the winter blues, it's time to de-clutter your life and give your home and mind a fresh start. Here are a few tips to help you tackle your spring cleaning:

Create a checklist:

Create a detailed to-do list for cleaning each area of the house. Having a list will help you organize your mind as well as your tasks. Each checkmark will also provide a sense of accomplishment. Keeping a checklist with me daily has helped me accomplish my life goals. My busy mind tends to wander around so having a checklist helps me to stay on task.

Smart de-cluttering:

Don't be afraid to get rid of stuff. There are likely belongings built up over the years that no one uses anymore. Start "sell" and "donate" piles for items that are in good shape and a trash pile for items that are not worth keeping. You will be surprised how much better you'll feel with the new space. I learned this two years ago and I felt like I lost 100 pounds. I mean, even after losing 60 pounds four years ago, I was keeping my bigger clothes thinking one day I may need them again! When I knew I could keep the weight off and move forward, I hired an organizer to help me with this challenge because organization is not my strength. For example, it was so bad, I was storing my clothes in my bedroom and not my closet because I could not walk into my closet because of the clutter. Now I love my closet and I keep what I love in there.

Make spring cleaning a family activity:

Spring cleaning is not a one-person job. Getting your family involved in an annual spring cleaning event can be a fun bonding experience. Make a list for each member of the family based on their ability level and preference. My kids are now old enough to help and I am very grateful for them. Since we are now using all chemical free cleaning supplies I feel comfortable with them using them.

Focus on just one area at a time:

You will be able to get more done, more effectively, by focusing on one room/area at a time. If you try to multi-task during cleaning, it can take you longer to get your chores done. Start with the more difficult areas to clean, such as the bathroom or kitchen, and then move to easier areas. It's also good to know your strengths. My husband is better with the bathroom, I love dealing with the clothes, my girls love to dust with the dust busters, and my son is good with vacuuming. This allows you to save some energy for the rest of the day.

Eliminate distractions:

Open the windows. Let the fresh spring air and warm light into every room in your house. Scott, my husband, is so good about opening all the windows. He loves natural light above all other lighting. After you're finished cleaning, buy a fresh bouquet of spring flowers. The bright colors and wonderful fragrance will lift your mood and add beauty to your home.

Then, after her first upper cervical adjustment at age 21, her health began to improve thanks to upper cervical care and natural herbal remedies. This enabled her to create a drug-free wellness lifestyle for herself and her family, and she also enthusiastically discovered her calling to help children heal naturally.

Dr. Weaver was recently named one of Charlotte Magazine's "Top Doctors" in 2016 and is now a number-one internationally bestselling author to two books: Learning How to Breathe and No More Meds.

Upper Cervical Wellness Center is known for finding the root cause of health concerns through lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing, nutraceutical supplementation, and correction of subluxation (as opposed to just medicating the symptoms). The practice offers cutting-edge technological care at its state-of-the-art facility, including laser-aligned upper cervical X-rays, bioimpedance analysis (measures body composition), digital thermography (locates thermal abnormalities characterized by skin inflammation), and complete nutritional blood analysis, which is focused on disease prevention.
