Dr. Corinne Weaver: Best Strategies to Make Sure Your New Year's Resolutions Last a Lifetime!

Dr. Corinne Weaver : Jan 19, 2018 : DrCorinneWeaver.com

Say your goals out loud! By saying it out loud to someone, you turn a wish into a reality and into something that exists outside of your head. This is also a reason why I write things down. The simple act of TELLING someone about your goals can encourage you to continue at times when you're tempted to quit.

It's week three of the New Year. How are you doing on your resolutions? No matter what your goals are for this New Year, the most important thing is that you have a clear and realistic view of what you want to achieve. Nothing will happen overnight. For that reason, it's important that you have motivation and the ability to self-motivate for those times when achieving your goals seems too much. (Photo: Dr. Corinne Weaver)

STEP ONE - Focused Reminders
To help with your self-motivation try choosing a phrase of particular importance to you. I love to pick uplifting Scriptures like Phil. 4:6 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Then, write it down and place it somewhere visible. Share it with your friends and family.

STEP TWO - Ask Yourself These Questions and Take Responsibility
Many people feel like making big life changes that will last is very difficult and warrants a lot of support. This year I am encouraging you to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for your own path. It can be a tough truth to realize, but as soon as we come to terms with our own sense of autonomy and realize that only we have the power to change our own life, it can open up so many doors! If you are willing to do the work NOW, you can enjoy the process and enjoy the outcome of taking personal responsibility for your goals—whatever they may be! It is WORTH IT!!!

A question I frequently ask myself is: Who am I? Who am I to ask for and get what I want? Who am I to achieve my goals? Who am I to be proud of myself? I've asked myself all these things at some point or another, and I can tell you that nothing changed until I realized one thing: Nobody is going to do it for me.

You have every right to be proud of yourself, every right to strive for the happiest, most fulfilled version of you, no matter what the circumstances, and nobody knows what that is to you, except for you!

My goal is not just to help you achieve the goals you set yourself, but ALLOW yourself to enjoy the feeling of getting there when you do—celebrating every obstacle you overcome and every negative emotion with the reward it deserves! Enjoy the journey!

STEP THREE - Partner Up
One of the best strategies I've found that works when trying to have self-discipline is to have a 'buddy' or someone to talk to about your progress. This person shouldn't judge, hinder, or influence your progress, but simply help you to ascertain your goals. Say your goals out loud! By saying it out loud to someone, you turn a wish into a reality and into something that exists outside of your head. This is also a reason why I write things down. The simple act of TELLING someone about your goals can encourage you to continue at times when you're tempted to quit. Imagine going back on your word to someone you love?

A key element of those who achieve better and more sustainable results is stamina. Whatever you want to call it, goals require dedication and the ongoing desire to succeed. This is why I keep restating the importance of having a clear goal. Knowing what you want is sometimes a hard thing to figure out. It took me years to figure out what I truly wanted. Now my vision is clear, I want to help people get healthy so that they don't need more meds! That is why I started the #NoMoreMeds-Community on Facebook. Because I receive over 200 emails weekly sometimes it's hard for me to answer them all. This is a closed group on Facebook and I plan to do Facebook live answering questions weekly. I believe answering questions in this group will help benefit the others in the group.

NOTE: Right now, the group is free, but soon I will be charging a monthly fee of $30. If you sign up now I will not charge you ever, but you need to enter the group soon before the fee starts!

STEP FOUR: Clarify Your Goals
In order to clarify your goals, narrow them down by doing this quick challenge: Use as few words as you can to explain what your goal is, why you want to achieve it and when you aim to do so. The goals you write down need to be very specific, so you know you achieved it.

Here are some simple examples:

Get a promotion
• Save X amount of money so I can travel to Australia in January of next year
• Lose X amount of weight
• Have enough energy to walk 20 minutes a day
• Take my daughter to the zoo so she can see a panda bear

It's important at this point to realize that no matter what your goal, as soon as you start implementing steps to achieve it, you run the risk of becoming bored as the new routine becomes your new norm. There are SO MANY ways to get creative about how you achieve your goals—from countless healthy recipes for our favorite foods to new places to run or workout. Even something as simple as sitting in a different seat in your favorite café while you work can inspire a fresh perspective. And that's the point, isn't it? To ENJOY every step, not just ENDURE it.

"People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing." -Dale Carnegie

STEP FIVE: Evaluate
After implementing the steps listed above, evaluate any changes: what differences do you feel in energy? In motivation? In your motivation to continue achieving your goal? Writing things down is one of the best ways to ensure accountability for your thoughts, goals, and actions. It clarifies ideas, dreams, intentions, and makes them more achievable by physically engaging you. It helps with motivation. It helps with recognizing emotions and thought patterns.

You will face times when your goal seems unachievable. It could simply be your perception, or it may be actual circumstances, and it's these times when your vigilance will be tested. Here's a list of some go-to methods to help in these times:

• Make an immediate to-do list of what can be done RIGHT NOW to ease your struggle?
• Get rid of social media. It tempts us to compare ourselves or waste time
• Remember what you're grateful for
• Applaud yourself for how far you've come, not on how far there's still left to go
• Do what makes you happy; sing, dance, be silly, get yourself back to the lighthearted version of you that started this challenge
• Move your body: even if your goals aren't fitness-related, movement has a profound effect on uplifting our mood and productivity
• Start small: Remember, Baby Steps—good results take effort

I understand there are probably several emotions coming to the surface right now as you read this. You may be excited, overwhelmed, or both!

They are both GREAT emotions! Your excitement will drive you and feeling overwhelmed will force you to take the process more seriously.

Remember that your goals for 2018 will hopefully add to a higher quality of life not only for you, but for your friends and family, too. You just might be the inspiration they need to take similar steps! If you feel like you need support on this journey, I am more than happy to help. I love guiding people who are ready to take their life to the next level!

And finally, remember this quote: "There are two days in the year where you cannot do anything—YESTERDAY and TOMORROW. Only today can you be happy, smile, dream, love, and be thankful." -Pablo

I hope my column speaks to you and you can wake up each morning with a purpose. What I do every day is a calling, and I give God the glory for allowing His gifts to work through me. I do believe in miracles, because I get to see them every day! If you would like to contact me with your health concerns email me directly at Dr@drcorinneweaver.com. Keep Breathing,
Dr. Corinne

Dr. Corinne Weaver is a compassionate upper cervical chiropractor, educator, motivational speaker, mother of three, and internationally bestselling author. In 2004, she founded the Upper Cervical Wellness Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina. Over the last 13 years, she has helped thousands of clients restore their brain to-body function. When she was 10 years old, she lost her own health as the result of a bike accident that led to having asthma and allergy issues that she thought she would always have to endure. Then, after her first upper cervical adjustment at age 21, her health began to improve thanks to upper cervical care and natural herbal remedies. This enabled her to create a drug-free wellness lifestyle for herself and her family, and she also enthusiastically discovered her calling to help children heal naturally.

Dr. Weaver was recently named one of Charlotte Magazine's "Top Doctors" in 2016 and is now a number-one internationally bestselling author to two books: Learning How to Breathe and No More Meds.

Upper Cervical Wellness Center is known for finding the root cause of health concerns through lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing, nutraceutical supplementation, and correction of subluxation (as opposed to just medicating the symptoms). The practice offers cutting-edge technological care at its state-of-the-art facility, including laser-aligned upper cervical X-rays, bioimpedance analysis (measures body composition), digital thermography (locates thermal abnormalities characterized by skin inflammation), and complete nutritional blood analysis, which is focused on disease prevention.
