Prayer Volunteer Calls Franklin Graham's Decision America Rally a "Holy Moment"

Kellie Van Gilder : Jun 9, 2016  BillyGraham.org

As a volunteer, she walked the grounds the day of the event, praying and offering to pray with those she said God showed her.

[BillyGraham.org] Susan Jones can always find a way to contribute. Whether it's praying over sandbags and volunteering with Samaritan's Purse to help flood victims in West Monroe, Louisiana, or holding the hand of one of her declining patients, this intensive care nurse is determined to do her part. So when she heard about the opportunity to volunteer with Franklin Graham's Decision America Tour, she signed right up and made the four-hour drive a day early so she could cover her State Capitol in prayer ahead of time.

Prayer is so important to Susan, and so is patriotism. Love of her country was handed down to her from her father who fought with the Navy in World War II and the Korean War. Her uncle also enlisted. Serving the United States of America wasn't something Susan's family took lightly.

Susan made serving during the Jan. 13 Louisiana prayer rally one of her many prayer missions. As a volunteer, she walked the grounds the day of the event, praying and offering to pray with those she said God showed her. She remembers being impressed by a young boy standing front-and-center with his Bible open.

"He was standing on the front row with his Bible, and it just made you think of the youth," Susan said. "Just seeing somebody that young standing there leaning up against the rail waiting for Franklin Graham to come out."

Watching Franklin Graham share his message triggered childhood memories for Susan, who is in her early 60s. She remembers her parents watching Billy Graham on their black-and-white television set. They didn't miss a sermon. But there was a slight disconnect for young Susan. She remembers sitting in her closet late at night with the light on desperately trying to understand the King James Bible.

"I thought you had to be a good Christian when you grew up, so I would pray, 'When I get grown, help me to be a good Christian,'" Susan said.

Somewhere around age 27, working as an intensive care nurse, she got the bigger picture through the influence of a coworker. Today, she works part-time and prays full-time, carrying the presence of Jesus with her wherever she goes. (Photo: Susan Jones/via BillyGraham.org)

The opportunity to get involved in the Decision America Tour was something she won't soon forget.

"To feel that unity, to focus on our nation, on our country, it's just a holy moment," she said.

Susan encourages all to get involved. If you can't volunteer or attend, you can still be there in spirit, Susan says.

"Not everybody can go that far or has the financial means or a car or whatever, but even in your home, you can stop what you're doing and pray from wherever you are," Susan said. "You're still going to be in agreement with everybody in unity."
