This ISIS-Related School Assignment Was Cancelled after Being Called into Question; But Why Would It Be Given in the First Place?

Aimee Herd-Commentary : Nov 20, 2015  Jon Street-The Blaze

"My initial response was, 'there's no way you're going to do this assignment."

(Utah)—When 14-year-old Mikalia brought home a school assignment that required drawing an Islamic State propaganda poster, and Googling "how to recruit for ISIS," her mother stepped in refusing to allow her daughter to complete it. (Photo: KSTU-TV/via The Blaze)

Mikalia's mom, Annie Langston wrote a letter to the school's principal as well as the teacher who gave the assignment, "demanding an explanation," according to a Blaze report.

"My initial response was, 'there's no way you're going to do this assignment,'" said Langston, adding, "I feel a different assignment or report could've been chosen or a discussion in class about the tragic events."

The school's officials contacted Langston telling her that they had met with the teacher and cancelled the assignment, and that the issue had been reportedly "taken care of." (Screengrab via The Blaze)

The teacher also called Mikalia's mother to apologize.

Some of the children in the class had already completed the offensive assignment, however, those papers were later shredded, the principal told Langston.

It's commendable that the school officials recognized the gravity of the situation and cancelled the assignment, but the question remains; why would it be given in the first place?

This is another striking reminder that parents with children still in school must be vigilant in knowing what their kids are being taught.
