"Never a More Crucial Time for America to Come Together in Prayer"—AFA Reminds Americans ahead of Thursday

American Family Association Encourages Signing 'I Will Pray' Pledge as Court Prepares Historic Marriage Decision

(Tupelo, MS)—Millions of Americans will come together for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7, and the American Family Association (AFA) says there has perhaps never been a more crucial time to pray. (Photo: File/Wikipedia Commons)

AFA is urging Christians across the country to make an "I Will Pray" commitment through an online pledge that encourages Americans to pray for the Supreme Court decision regarding same-sex marriage. An announcement of the decision is expected in late June.

AFA President Tim Wildmon added that America needs prayer in many other ways as well, including for racial unrest in communities across the country.

"There has perhaps never been a more crucial time for our country to come together in prayer," Wildmon said. "As the Supreme Court decides the fate of the definition of marriage in America, we must pray for the justices to make the right decision for American families and children. Likewise, as we watch American cities devastated by racial unrest, we pray for peace, understanding and a sincere desire for restoration in every city and neighborhood. Matthew 18:20 tells us that, 'where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.' As Christians, we know the Lord never leaves us or forsakes us, and for that we thank Him and praise Him and always keep His divine plans for our lives at the forefront." (Graphic via AFA)

On the special "I Will Pray" section of its website, AFA asks Americans to commit to prayer as the Supreme Court justices consider the oral arguments heard last week regarding marriage and as they prepare their opinions, to be released in June.

For the 2015 Day of Prayer observance, the theme is "Lord, Hear Our Cry," centering on I Kings 8:28: "Hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying in Your presence this day." Prayer events are scheduled nationwide.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation, according to the National Day of Prayer web site. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The National Day of Prayer Task Force communicates the need for personal repentance and prayer, creates Day of Prayer materials and resources, and mobilizes the Christian community to intercede for America's leaders and their families.
