Pope Meets Freed Meriam Ibrahim in Rome, as it's Revealed Italy Brokered Her Release from Sudan"We had the patience to speak to everyone in a friendly way. This paid off in the end." -Italian diplomat who accompanied Ibrahim from Sudan
Numerous reports say their meeting lasted about half an hour, with Ibrahim thanking the pontiff for his support and prayers. In turn, the pope thanked her for her family's "courageous witness and constancy of faith." An AP report notes that upon her arrival, accompanied by her husband Daniel Wani and their two children, Ibrahim stepped off the plane in Italy carrying her sleeping infant. The report also credited the Italian government with brokering Ibrahim's release from Sudan. Said Lapo Pistelli, an Italian diplomat who traveled with the family from Sudan, "We had the patience to speak to everyone in a friendly way. This paid off in the end."
