"Surfer Girl" Cares for Vulnerable Youth

Teresa Neumann : Sep 10, 2012 : Cathy Ingalls – Albany Democrat-Herald

Recently, she put together a local competition for 160 kids, giving away a skateboard, a scooter, and a BMX bike.

REPORTER'S NOTE: I'm privileged to know Katy Moes. Her trademark smile and sunny personality betray the fact that she has suffered multiple personal tragedies in her life. She has been tested and tried and not found lacking in her faith. Though I have to give some of the credit to her late mother, an extraordinary woman in her own right, for passing on a spirit of love and tenacity to her daughter, Katy is simply one of the most inspiring young ladies I've ever met. Imagine my joy, when I saw our local paper honor her! -Teresa Neumann, BCN.

Katy Moes(Albany, OR)—Katy Moes, 27, a happily married Oregonian with two beautiful toddlers, spent some of her pre-married years ministering in the Caribbean to poor, disenfranchised youth. An avid surfer and skim boarder then and now, Katy's drive to reach out to youth hasn't diminished a bit.

According to a report in the Albany-Democrat Herald, Moes has recruited volunteers from Jesus Pursuit Church, the church she attends, to help her feed vulnerable local youth—anywhere between 20 and 60 of them—at the Albany Skate Park one night a week for the last two years.

"For the kids that go there every day," she said, "the people are their adopted family. A lot of them don't want to go home or they want to be outside all day so they can skate. Some of them go to school and some of them don't."

Katy, who works in food service at the University of Oregon, told the newspaper that her family was poor as she was growing up, and traveled around quite a bit.

"My first few years were a little rough and I went through a lot of what these kids are going through," she said.
